Amy Ledgerwood, Accounting - Olathe
My husband, Gene, just retired from being a firefighter two years ago after years of serving in the Olathe fire department. My two sons grew up hearing about their father’s job and all the people he helped, so it was no surprise to me when they both decided to accept jobs to serve the community. My son Kyle is a firefighter and Derek is a police officer. Between my husband and two sons, I will never escape the life of worry and pride for my family’s work.
Gene was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer 12 years ago and took a break from working for 6 months to go through chemo radiation. After rehab, he was able to go back to working full time as a firefighter after treatment. I am amazed with his strength and ability to go back to such a physically demanding job. After the cancer, it was hard for him to work in the extreme conditions that his job required, which lead to his retirement, but not until he became a fire captain.
Over the years of being a firefighter’s wife, I have had a lot of time to myself because of the weird work schedules. I have developed a lot of little hobbies overtime such as cross stitching and reading, but my favorite thing to do is gardening. I like planting flowers, specifically day lilies and sunflowers. Along with the flowers, I enjoy planting herbs that I can use for cooking. My favorite herbs to use while cooking are dill and rosemary, but lavender is my favorite herb to grow.
While I do like cooking for myself with food from my own garden, I also really like trying foods from other cultures too. When I was younger I went to Europe for a month and got to try all sorts of foods. One meal that really stuck out to me was a mooseburger instead of a hamburger. I do like to try unique foods, but I also like traditional ones as well. My all-time favorite dessert is tiramisu and that is a little bit more of a “normal” sweet treat.
