What is "real" American BBQ? Well, that depends on what part of the country you come from and who your parents are. My history with BBQ dates back to my childhood living in Marianna, Arkansas, about 30 minutes northwest of Helena, Arkansas where I was born. I remember when my grandfather Robert would make some of his delicious BBQ ribs and shredded pork. You see, barbecuing is deep in my roots. My grandfather taught my father Donald and, of course, he passed not only his name but also his BBQ knowledge onto me.
Sometime after college, things really got cooking. Not only did I barbecue more, but also expanded my library of books on the subject with the goal of getting better and better. My dad and I spent a year building a custom smoker, which was a very big undertaking, but in the end, we were so proud. I love to wow people, including my family, friends, and coworkers, with my tender, succulent barbecue. The ribs are my wife’s favorite.
I have also been part of some BBQ competitions. I am proud to say my smoked BBQ chicken got first place in the chicken category this past October at the Springhill Neighborhood Fall Festival. I also got 14th place in the Lenexa Barbecue competition back into 2013. What is in my BBQ future? Entering bigger competitions with my dad and uncle, which we plan to accomplish by getting more experience with the smaller competitions first.
