Have courage

Fiona Lai, Export Sales Manager Asean, Singapore

Working for TVH, I discover new things about working life almost every day. But I also learn about people and about different perspectives. It challenges me and gives me the platform to grow on a personal level as well.

Understanding other people’s perspectives is so important. The biggest regret in my life is that I didn’t have the courage to say sorry to my father when in hindsight I should have. I was 23 years old and had an argument with him because he did not allow me to go to the Flowers market with friends at 5 o’clock in the morning. We didn’t talk to each other for almost a week before I flew back to Singapore. One week later we found out that he got cancer. Life without him was unimaginable. I wish I did have the courage to apologize to my dad back then and show him again and again how much I love him.

My mom is now my biggest inspiration. We may not have the same mindset about everything, but she shows me love, kindness, patience and I admire how brave she is despite all the difficult times she has endured in life. I try to incorporate the same strong values in my job. I lead a very diverse team and help colleagues to manage their challenges through best practice sharing, open communication and listening to each other. Only then can you find the most optimal solution to solve problems.

My mantra in life: ‘The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude!’
