Phil Juarez– Materials Group, Manufacturing Supervisor - Olathe
My interest in model aviation began at an early age. As young as nine, I remember my mom packing a picnic lunch and taking my siblings and I out into the country on the weekends to watch our father compete. When I expressed an interest in building and flying my own plane, my dad promptly took me to the store and bought me my first model airplane. My dad was a huge positive influence and role model, he always had an encouraging word and would praise what I’d gotten right and suggest ways I could make my next plane even better. Because of my dad’s example, my passion for model aviation has followed me into adulthood. I now design custom planes to compete with, sometimes spending as long as 18 months to build one start to finish.
My expertise in design and skill at flying has allowed me to compete in National competitions. At these, I have finished as high as fifth place, making me eligible to compete for a spot on the US World Team if I wanted. My design talent has also provided the opportunity for me to create museum models which are currently on display in California. Furthermore, I’ve had the chance to do some restoration work on a B-17 Flying Fortress that is on display in a California museum.
