As visitors to the United States from Belgium, my team and I wanted to make sure we took full advantage of our time in the area to see some of the natural beauty of Missouri. We planned our trip to arrive in the States a day early so that we could use our free time on Sunday to drive down to Table Rock Lake in southern Missouri, close to the Arkansas border. The drive down was uneventful and we spent a nice day at the lake. The only downside was the heat, which was a bit more oppressive than what we’re used to back home.
Our trip took a turn for the worse when, still almost four hours from our hotel, the air conditioner in our car stopped working. Knowing the rest of the drive would be miserable, we decided to continue on as we had been invited to watch a football game at a coworker’s house. However, less than 30 minutes later, the car radio stopped working! By this point we were afraid to stop and turn off the car in case it wouldn’t start again. Turns out it didn’t matter because in quick order the car battery died, the brakes stopped working and then the steering stopped working as well. Luckily, we were close to an off-ramp and were able to maneuver the car off the road.
Unfortunately, help was difficult to come by. The area businesses were closed, we didn’t know what to do and we didn’t all have service on our phones, so calling for help was difficult. We finally got ahold of Mandy, but found out that the tow service from the rental company wouldn’t arrive for two hours. We decided to try Uber and luck was finally with us! It took just two minutes for the driver to arrive and amazingly, he agreed to drive us the three hours back to our hotel. Needless to say, we missed the football game. We finally got back to our room around 8:00 PM that night and just wanted to drink lots of water and enjoy the air conditioning.
